Plum dumplings

This is the classic Hungarian recipe for plum dumplings, adapted in a healthier version - without refined sugar, but just as tasty!

First of all, I have to start by saying that it was my mother who taught me how to prepare the plum dumpling recipe . I tried to make the original plum dumpling recipe as healthy as possible, reducing the amounts of oil and not using refined sugar, but healthy substitutes such as date sugar and honey. Of course you can use what you have at hand, and brown sugar is ok.


I don't really go for the recipes that take a long time to prepare, that's why I always let my mother make them. I am always happy to help her when she also prepares this recipe. The plum dumpling recipe is one of my favorite recipes. I just don't get tired of them when I make them!


Why do you think I don't have a group picture with all the dumplings? Well, I ate them. Not just me of course, me and my dad! We laugh all the time. 😀

Dumplings (plums) with plums

This is the classic Hungarian recipe for plum dumplings, adapted in a healthier version - without refined sugar, but just as tasty!


Prep time - 30 mins Cook time - 60 mins Total time - 1 hour 30 mins Serves - 25

Ingredients

  • 1 kg of potatoes

  • 250g wholemeal flour or universal gluten-free flour mix

  • 2 eggs

  • 25 plums, without seeds

  • 2 tablespoons oil

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • ½ Spoon rum extract

  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar (or dates as I used)

  • 2 tablespoons oil

  • 150 g pesmet

  • honey or maple syrup


Instructions

  1. Boil the potatoes in their skins for about 15 minutes. After they have boiled, take them out of the water and let them cool a bit. Peel a squash, grate it and squeeze the juice.

  2. Put the mashed potatoes in a larger bowl and add beaten eggs, 2 tablespoons oil and flour. Mix the ingredients until they form a sticky paste.

  3. Mix cinnamon, vanilla, rum extract and sugar and add a teaspoon or half a teaspoon to each plum.

  4. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan and add over the breadcrumbs. Brown it carefully for a few minutes. Be careful not to burn yourself. Then put it on a plate to cool.

  5. Divide the shell in half. Roll it with a fork and divide it into small portions for dumplings, so you can put plums in them. Take each portion and form a ball. Flatten the ball and place the plum in the center. Cover plum with coca. Tip: It is best to have your hands covered with flour so that your dumplings do not stick. Repeat the process until you have finished all the dumplings.

  6. Boil water in a larger pot. Add a pinch of salt. When the water has boiled, put the dumplings in the pot. If you see that the dumplings are sticking to the bottom of the pot, all you have to do is shake it a little. Let them boil for about 5 minutes. When they are ready they will begin to rise to the surface.

  7. Take them out of the water and roll them in breadcrumbs.

  8. Serve them with honey on top.
